Vehicle came in with a customer concern of a noise while driving, believed to be a wheel bearing noise.

Test drove the vehicle and verified the customer’s concern. There is a loud roaring/growling noise while driving consistent with a failing wheel bearing.

While driving at speed, swerved the vehicle left and right to shift vehicle weight and attempt to isolate the noise to a specific corner based on pitch change. Results of this test were inconclusive.

Raised the vehicle and spun each wheel by hand while placing a hand on the suspension coil spring to feel for vibration transfer. This test was also inconclusive, as the vibration and noise travel throughout the chassis.

Used an oscilloscope with piezo noise detection sensors, placing a sensor at each wheel location.

Ran the vehicle on the lift and compared noise levels between all four corners. Testing verified:

• The left front wheel bearing is producing the most noise
• The left rear wheel bearing is also showing signs of wear/noise development

Recommend replacing:

• Left front wheel bearing/hub assembly
• Left rear wheel bearing/hub assembly

After repairs are completed, recommend test driving the vehicle again to verify the noise has been corrected.
